The 2017 Wimbledon final on Sunday pits Marin Cilic, playing in his second career Grand Slam final, against Roger Federer, the holder of 18 grand slam titles, 7 of them from Wimbledon. Cilic is seeking a second career slam to cement himself as a Croatian sporting legend at the age of 28, Federer is looking for his second Grand Slam of the season, the first time he’d be the holder of 2+ slams in the same calendar year since 2009. Our panelists Steen Kirby, Brett Margolies, and Vithun Illankovan are on hand to offer their previews, with predictions.
Marin Cilic vs. Roger Federer
Steen: Cilic is a somewhat better player to Berdych, but they are both big hitters, and Federer just won his semifinal match in straight sets, while Cilic was pushed to four sets against a sleepy Sam Querrey. Cilic has the skill to win this title, but I’m not sure he’ll have the belief, Federer when healthy has just been too good on grass, he hasn’t dropped a set going back to Halle, and I’d say he’s closer to losing a set, than Cilic is to winning this match. Brett: Roger Federer’s impressive 2017 season just keeps on rolling. Coming in to Wimbledon he was the favorite, and has certainly looked the part so far. He’s now advanced to the final without dropping a set. Federer leads the H2H with Cilic 6-1 with the Cilic’s only win coming in 2014 at the US Open en route to his first major title. That day everything seemed to go right for Cilic, but Federer is just playing too good at the moment and that won’t change on Sunday. I expect Cilic to be able to take a set but not anything more than that. Federer in 4
Vithun: Something seems too perfect for Federer right now. However, when you are winning so easily you are very vulnerable to defeat as soon as you are challenged. Even as a fan of his, I didn’t really like the fact he skipped the entire clay season and believe he will face karma for this tactic. I sense an erratic performance brewing and am going for the upset. Cilic in 5
