The WTA Guangzhou Open continues in Guangzhou, China. As always, we are here at LWOT to predict as many matches for you as we can. We already have one set of predictions for the day, and here we have a second. Who will move on? Here are my thoughts.
WTA Guangzhou Open Day 2 Predictions
Kateryna Kozlova vs Shuai Zhang
Kozlova reached the quarterfinals last week in Nanchang, while Zhang was utterly destroyed by Lin Zhu. It’s hard to know if whatever went wrong last week for Zhang will have sorted itself out by now, but Kozlova is good enough to take full advantage if it hasn’t.
Prediction: Kozlova in 2
Katarina Zavatska vs Fiona Ferro
Fiona Ferro is in the midst of the best summer of her career. While her best results have been on clay, she has had some hard court success as well. She certainly has shown more than her Ukrainian opponent, who is still spending her time playing mostly ITF events, along with the occasional qualifier for a tour-level tournament. Zavatska has talent and should make an eventual splash on tour, but not yet.
Prediction: Ferro in 2
Andrea Petkovic vs Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove
Petkovic has been at nowhere near her best form recently, though she is currently ranked in the Top 100. She also pulled off a big upset over Petra Kvitova at the US Open last month. Her Dutch opponent, meanwhile, is a career journeywoman who has the ability to play strong tennis, but never consistently enough to earn a top ranking. If Petkovic’s game is off then this could be a surprise, but the match will be on the German’s racket throughout.
Prediction: Petkovic in 3
Katerina Siniakova vs Elena Rybakina
Siniakova is a talented young player who should be able to stay around the Top 50 for a long time to come. Rybakina, meanwhile, is an even younger rising talent who just cracked the Top 50 and should also stay there for a long time. Rybakina is in better form and playing better tennis overall. However, she was just trounced in the final of Nanchang by Rebecca Peterson on Sunday. That disappointment lingers and will take more than two days to get over. Siniakova will take advantage and move on to the next round.
